4. The WAR against DOG MANGE Began with Neem Oil

Dog affected by demodectic mange mites
"Sarge", frail and weakened by dog mange.
So now I've learned what mange is, but didn't know what type of mange my dog Sarge is suffering with. I quickly rule out localized demodectic mange because his mange is widespread. There's nothing local about it, and the fact that me some of my family members have been in close contact with our dog and not come down with any sort of ailment have led me to rule out Sarcoptic mites as the culprit, but I didn't know for sure. All I knew was that we were gonna cure this bulls#it and cure it now. By now, my dog was checkered with spots of various sizes with the initial two being HUGE. He had a large bald patch on his back and one on his ribs and it looked like they would soon connect to form a large bald spot. He also had lost 80% of the hair on his legs and toes. My dog also started to look weak and depressed. It was clear that his health was being affected by the mange. Some people told me that he looked like he was going to die soon. I knew he wouldn't die, I'm a fighter and so is my dog, so I had confidence that we would see it through. I looked at my dog and actually told him that I was gonna bring him back to glory.

Dog afflicted with mange mites. The first thing I did was go out and get 100% pure Neem Oil (it STINKS). I had learned that the neem oil has some extreme effects on critters, as it kills some, deters others, and make some insects instantly lose their sanity. I wanted to try this myself, so I used cotton balls to apply the oil to Sarge. The whole room stunk but instantly I started to see fleas coming out from between his remaiing hairs with the intent to flee the area. The fleas were actually trying to get away from my dog! Just to see what would happen, I dabbed some neem oil directly on a flea and it froze.. paralyzed on contact.

The next morning what I saw was shocking. The condition of my dogs feet and legs looked noticeably better, as a lot of the crusting had come off and a lot of hair had seem to grow over night. Over the course of the next 2 or 3 days, light hair became visible on his sores. After some more research I learned that I was using too much oil and that I could mix it with a "carrier oil" to help carry the neem oil under the skin where the mites dwell.

I had learned that neem has a lot of benefits when used against mange. The neem oil kills the eggs of both demodectic and sarcoptic mites. It also kills and/or changes the behavor of the adult mites on the body. Once they come in contact with neem, even in trace amounts - they will either die or forget they are mites and do things that mites just dont do. Neem has this effect on quite a few insects, causing them to forget to do what they naturally do.... such as lay eggs.

I also learned that these mites burrow holes in the surface of the skin where they dwell. Every few days, the females come to the surface to lay eggs. The eggs then hatch and those new mites then began to dig into your poor dogs skin and recreates the cycle. Keep in mind that these mite ARE parasites and they are biting and sucking your dog's blood to survive!

So I put one and one together and figured that rubbing neem oil into my dog's skin would inhibit the mites when they come to the surface, it was now time to get some to get inside the skin to catch the mites that have burrowed in there.  I decided to use some 100% african Shea Butter at first because It is non-greasy and absorbs quickly into the skin, But you can use any carrier oil, with grapeseed oil being possibly the best choice. I melted the shea butter and poured in a few drops of the neem oil and massaged it  into Sarge's torso, back and forehead. It's important to not to use too much of the oil because one, only a trace amount is needed to DAMAGE critters, and two, too much would work against the carrier being absorbed.easily into the skin. So you should always have much more carrier than neem oil in the solution.

The shea butter worked well, but I noticed it left a whitish film on my dog's skin that was visible hours after application. I switched to sesame oil, which went smoothly. NEEM OIL AND SESAME SEED OIL to BEGIN THE WAR.

  2. Hi, very excited about your post. I've been battling mange in my german shepherd. i've been using the borax/peroxide solution to spray him, he's a big boy and i can't soak him in a tub, so have to resort to spraying. it's helping a bit but not exceptionally. i've been doing it every day and it's not gone. would like to try the oil method. my dog has long fur, how would i apply the oil mixture? i do see the little spots on the feet, elbows that are black and crusty so those are easy to get to, but what about the whole body? because he doesn't itch at those spots, but all over the body, thank you for your time and help,

    1. hi Svetlana Ganea. if your dog has long fur, you need a water based spray. to make a water based spray, You have to add an emulsifier into the oil mixture. you can use soap, shampoo. i suggest you use shampoo or soap with soothing effect. herbal soap is better. then mix them with water and then you are good to go. a neem spray.

  3. Hi like to check with you for the mixture of neem oil with soap and water, do you need to wash it off after you have spray? Because there is soap content in it. Is it safe to leave it on my pets skin?

And what is the best ratio for neem oil and sesame oil mix?

    Thanks

    1. Hi Sapphire Garden. I am the author of this story, but I'm not the person that commented about neem with soap and water, so I wouldn't know much about that.

But 8 to 1 ratio of sesame to neem should work!

  4. Hi thank you so much for you blog. I have a 2 year old Bernese Mountain Dog that contracted mange around both of his eyes. I tried a few different treatments only to find nothing helped. Then I came across this blog. I immediately ran out and bought Neem and Sesame oil. As you recommended I mixed them at an 8 to 1 ratio. After 2 weeks of applying daily I couldn't believe how quickly he began to heal. It has now been 4 weeks and just about all of his hair is beginning to grow back. He is back to looking beautiful once again. Thanks again for you post.

    1. I bought the neem oil and sesame oil at amazon.com. Not expensive. I read the ratio to mix is 8 to 1. 1 being the neem oil. Also read you can put in shampoo, conditioner and dawn with water. Can spray on animal and use as insecticide. I would remove the animals for a couple of hours. Googling and amazon helped me research and find this. Am fixing to treat my dog with mange now. Then gradually do the rest of the animals as well. Hope this little bit helps. sheba9977!gmail.com or yahoo.com

    2. I have 7 dogs I have been fighting sarcoptic mange for months! Apparently we have been an experiment for Advantage Multi advised by our vet but not labeled for mange. When once a month topic didnt work, pharmaceutical co advised twice a month!!! They had allergic hot spots from it, now I realize in addition to the fact it didnt stop them. The only reason I have kept them somewhat u der wraps is from NEEM oil shampoos, 5ml pure neem oil to every 100ml dog shampoo, I used oatmeal shampoo to help the dry skin. They are now on "labeled for mange" revolution, once a month, and continued Neem shampoos, neem can also be used as an safe natural insecticide for plants, animals, even children, against mosquitoes, fleas etc. the insecticide is made with neem, warm water, and Non anti bacterial dish soap, not DAWN only because you are mixing with oils and dawn breaks down oils . There is also a anti itch neem oil that works great on humans and animals. Sad if you ask any vet or pharmacist about Neem they know nothing about it. Knowledge is power over greedy pharmaceutical companies all about money!

  8. ok so I did every thing that he said to do and its working but I added alittle more to it so I got to shea butter formula by palmers with vitamin E. Mixed it with neem like written and grapeseed oil also i have a fresh plant of aloe vera outside grab a stem opened it up and put the meat of the plant with the cream mix. Mixed it up good and rubbed it on her good. Next day she look so much but sores are healing a lot faster. Also with the peroxide and boax water mixer I also get a stem of aloe opened it up pour the meat in the water and put the stem also in water heat it up and let it sit over night and mixed all of the other items the next morning. For the itching I give my 10lb dog Benadryl 1ml to off set her itching. This is less then 1/4 of a tsp. She also wears a cone around her neck because she loved to bit her skin. Clipped her nails to. Its been about 1 week and I see a big change. After 3days of the boax mixture has been on her I take her a bath dry her off and lather her with the lotion mixture. My baby small so I didn't want her to get cold so I blow dry her alittle to speed the drying process up. I hope this helps

  12. I am not the author of this blog, however, I am currently using Neem oil with a carrier of Sweet Almond oil on my own dogs. At the amazon link I posted above 100 mls of Neem Oil costs £2.69; 250 mls of pure organic Neem Oil costs £4.60 and 500 mls of Neem Oil costs £6.99. If you have a few dogs one litre of Neem Oil costs £11.99. Also at www. Amazon.co.uk 500 mls of Sesame Seed Oil costs £4.46 alternatively you can buy 250 ml of Sweet Almond Oil, a known carrier oil, for £2.99. If you have a very large dog, or several dogs, 5 Litres of Sweet Almond Oil costs £22.99.

The website www.livestrong.com has an article called, How to Use Neem Oil for Scabies http://www.livestrong.com/article/98307-use-neem-oil-scabies/ wherein it recommends using Neem for Sarcoptic mange, "The (Neem) oil is frequently used to treat the skin disorder scabies, an infestation of a form of tiny mite called Sarcoptes scabiei." It goes on to say, "Pour some pure neem oil onto a clean cloth or gauze pad and apply the oil directly to any minor and localized scabies infestations." "Leave the (pure/undiluted) oil on the skin for fifteen to twenty minutes to help eliminate the mites and reduce the swelling, itching and inflammation associated with scabies."

The same website provides the following information for making a Neem and carrier oil solution to be used on human skin, "...mix 2 mL of neem oil into 100 mL of a carrier oil, such as coconut or olive oil. Rub the mixture in a thin layer on exposed skin. Reapply at least every 12 hours." http://www.livestrong.com/article/91313-apply-neem-oil/

If you're confused by the math just think of it in ratios: mix one drop of Neem Oil into eight drops of carrier oil. If you have a small pet you may want to use a weaker solution of 1 drop of Neem Oil into ten drops of carrier oil.

  14. My dog got her mange when she got pregnant a few months ago and I've tried every other natural route I can take and I'm waiting on my neem oil to get here. She has gotten so bad that she scratches until she bleeds no matter what I put on her to help with the itching. How do I make her stop doing this?

  17. A few commenters have asked the question as to "how often" should one apply the neem oil on a dog with mange, and hardly a person has given their advice. Does anyone new have a protocol that was affective? Is there any side effects to using the neem oil/carrier oil too often? Great Post!
